Targeted Cover Letters

The purpose of a cover letter is to transmit the resume and introduce the reader to you! This should not be distracting from the resume, rather attracting the reader to turn the page to your resume. It should contain answers to any requests written in the job announcement.

Cover letters are most effective when they are targeted, that is, directed to a human being—someone in Human Resources, or the Hiring Manager. We are aware that it is not always possible to know who to send it to. However, we do provide research services and can help you find that information.

There are differing opinions on whether or not a cover letter is required. If the job announcement asks for a cover letter, you need to submit one. If you are mass mailing, it is not absolutely necessary, but it could be helpful if it is well written.

Sometimes the employer will ask for salary history, salary desired, availability, and other things not necessarily listed on a resume. If you do not feel comfortable submitting salary history and other requests, we have excellent tips on how to handle those requests.

If you submit a cover letter, it needs to be concise, not an autobiography. The focus should be on the resume. You need to convey that you fill the employer's needs. It should briefly summarize of your qualifications. And, it needs to have likeability so the reader will turn the page to the resume.

We will write a high-impact cover letter that can be edited by you to customize for each employer, if desired. If you provide a list of your target employers and their addresses, we can tackle this project as well. Your cover letters will be formatted the same as your resume.
