I am humbled and blessed to hear it frequently. The combination of your talent, my expertise, and my network, can make all the difference between you landing the job...or not.
Prior to starting my company, I worked at the Idaho National Laboratory working for the prime contractor to the Department of Energy. During that time, I worked in human resources, electronic publications, the Spent Nuclear Fuel Program, and in the General Manager's office when staff were away.
The Spent Nuclear Fuel program was brand new so my position was brand new. I created everything from the ground up. I was transitioning from electronic publications. I remember interviewing for the position and was offered the job informally at the interview. As I was leaving, I walked about 50 feet down the hall and my boss came running out and called me back and said: "Oh, what kind of typewriter shall I order you?" My heart sunk into my stomach. I remember thinking, oh my gosh. What have I done? I never had a job using a typewriter. Even when I was a 911 dispatcher years before, I used a "computer."
I'm sure the look on my face was telling. I was not really sure what to say. Then I said, "I have never really used a typewriter on a job. I'm not sure which one to tell you to get. I have been using the WANG." He said, "Well, I hear there is a new kind of computer we could get. Let me check into that." I was semi-relieved, but nervous now about if I could do the work.
When I arrived at my new job, there was a brand new personal computer with dual floppy drives and the letters were orange on a black background. I was used to green on black. I couldn't figure out why two floppy drives. Our Wang computers had one 8" floppy drive on the central unit. I soon figured it out, but thought it was odd to have to put in a separate floppy disk to spell check! (Yes, this dates me and I still like DOS...to a point.) ;-)
While working in this program, I was one of the first secretaries to get a personal computer. Luckily, the main software, at the time, was MultiMate and it was almost identical to what I was using--the WANG word processor. This is what started my teaching career. I learned the computer and software then taught others and within a short time the local technical college asked me to be an adjunct instructor for software courses. The courses were generally once a week for 18 weeks!
Out of necessity, I had some people ask me to teach them privately and more often so they could get a job faster...and my company was born. I now had three jobs.
Then, while working at the INL, there was a need for subcontractors to perform technical word processing services for the department where I started my career. I won the contract and maintained it for 11 years. I landed other contracts and grew the company to 35 staff.
Then life happened (I had a baby) and I chose to change my business model so I could raise my son. This change has allowed me to meet and help all over the world. I truly love my job. It is diverse and challenging. I love to know what people do for a living and how they are changing the world. My clients are definitely those who make a difference. I find out how, digitally present it, and help them land their dream jobs...faster!
I look forward to helping YOU!
